Matilda South
Matilda South married Benjamin Holmes on 15 August 1826 in the parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul at Sheffield, now Sheffield Cathedral. She was of Sheffield parish and a spinster. Joseph Corker and Joseph Hudson witnessed it.
She was about eighteen. The 1850 census gives her age as forty two, which puts her birth about 1808. South was a common Sheffield name, and the same church baptised Souths in almost every year of her childhood. Where she herself was baptised is not known.
Her son Alfred was born in England about 1831. By June 1835 she was in Pennsylvania, where her daughter Sarah was born, and by about 1836 in Ohio. Martha was born at Cincinnati in 1838, and four more children followed there: Benjamin, William, Matilda and George, the last about 1849. In 1850 she was keeping a house of nine in Ward Ten, with an English couple and their baby lodging under the same roof.
Ohio's death certificates had a printed line for the mother's maiden name, and that line is why her surname survives. Two of her daughters' certificates fill it the same way. Martha Hille's, filed at Cincinnati in February 1914, reads Matilda South, England. Sarah Mahl's, filed there after her death on 31 December 1915, reads Matilda South, England. The Sheffield marriage of 1826 joins the two names a third time.
Her death is not known.
