Matthew Marvin was baptised in St. Mary's church at Great Bentley in Essex on 26 March 1600, the youngest son of Edward and Margaret Marvin. His father died when he was fifteen and left him the mansion house called Edons alias Dreybrockes and two crofts of land called Hartles and Brocken Heddes, on condition that he paid his mother six pounds a year for as long as she lived.

He served his own parish as sideman in 1621, overseer in 1627 and senior warden in 1628, and is last named there on 22 August 1633. His mother was buried at St. Mary's in May 1633, and two years later he sailed.

He left London in the Increase, Robert Lea master, having proved on 15 April 1635 that his party had taken the oaths of allegiance and supremacy, with his wife Elizabeth and four children. He was one of the twelve earliest settlers of Hartford and surveyor of highways there in 1639 and 1647, and from 1650 an original settler of Norwalk, third named in the Indian deed of February 1651.

His will is dated 26 December 1678 and his inventory, at 398 pounds 12 shillings and eightpence, was taken on 13 July 1680.
