Matthew Webster
Matthew Webster was born about 1564 at Cossington in Leicestershire, a son of John Webster by his second wife, whose name is not recorded. His father's first wife, Isabel, had died in 1560 after a birth. By 1587 Matthew was his father's son and heir apparent.
On 16 April 1587 his father made a deed in consideration of a marriage between "Matthew Webster, his son and heir apparent, and Elisabeth Aston, the daughter of John Aston, of Woodborowe, co. Notts., gent." He granted the family's messuage and three virgates in Cossington to two trustees: Matthew Babington of Cossington, gentleman, and Hugh Bothe, the rector. One virgate was to be held to the use of Matthew and Elizabeth and Matthew's male heirs, and the rest to John for his life and then to Matthew. A virgate was a holding of about twenty four acres of open field land. The next day, 17 April 1587, Matthew and Elizabeth were married at Cossington.
They had three children there. Faith was baptised on 9 June 1588. John was baptised on 16 August 1590. Anis was baptised on 27 August 1592. Two weeks later Matthew was dead. He died on 13 September 1592 and was buried at Cossington the same day.
He made his will on 25 August 1592. He left lamb hogs, yearling sheep, to "his brother-in-law James Aston." His father-in-law John Aston witnessed it, with the squire and the parson.
Matthew's father died two years later, in October 1594. The jury at the inquest of 1615 found that Matthew's son John, aged four years, one month and twenty eight days, was John Webster's kinsman and next heir. That boy was John Webster, later governor of Connecticut. Matthew's daughter Anis died at four and was buried on 10 November 1596.
