John Webster
John Webster was born about 1535, probably a son of John Webster of Cossington in Leicestershire, who died in 1575. His elder brother William, called "s. and heir of John Webster," was buried in February 1572/3, and John came into the family farm.
He married first, on 1 October 1559, Isabel Ky-thin. Their daughter Eme was christened on 8 August 1560 and buried on 11 August. Isabel was buried the next day, 12 August 1560.
He married again, but his second wife's name is not recorded. She was the mother of Matthew, born about 1564, and of a long line of children. Elynor was christened on 18 November 1561 and buried on 10 December. Elizabeth was christened on 18 October 1562. Margaret followed in 1570. Humfrey was christened on 7 September 1571 and buried on 24 September. Emott was christened on 27 September 1573 and buried on 1 February 1574/5.
He held the office of churchwarden in 1577, 1578, 1584 and 1590, and signed the village agreement of 1584/5. On 16 April 1587 he settled part of his farm, a messuage and three virgates, on his son Matthew's marriage to Elizabeth Aston. Matthew died in 1592. John was buried at Cossington on 11 October 1594. The inquest found that he died on 12 October, and that his heir was his grandson John, son of Matthew, aged four years and two months. The land was held of the Queen as of her manor of East Greenwich, by fealty only, and was worth ten shillings a year.
