Michael Bacon
Michael Bacon was baptised at Winston in Suffolk on 6 December 1579. He was a son of Michael Bacon, a yeoman of Winston, and Elizabeth Wylie. His father farmed the family's Winston land, which had come down from Thomas Bacon of Helmingham through the wills of 1534 and 1557. His brothers were John, the eldest, William and Thomas, and his sisters Elizabeth and Sarah.
His mother died before 1607, and that September his father married the widow Grace Blowerses. His father made his will in October 1614, naming "Michael Bacon my sonne," and was buried on 25 March 1615.
He and his brother William both went to Ireland. William was at Dublin in 1639, came over in 1640 and settled at Salem. Michael came from Ireland the same year and settled at Dedham in Massachusetts. Their uncle William Bacon of Coddington had named William in his will of 1610 as "son of brother Michael Bacon."
His children were all born in England: Michael about 1608, Daniel about 1615, John, Alice and Sarah. His eldest son went to Woburn when it was founded in 1640.
He held a planting lot on the south side of the Charles River. In 1644 he gave up part of it to the town for a common highway three rods broad, running from the training ground to the cart bridge over the river. The town paid him in land and in promises. He was to have the rest of a ten acre lot on the island in the river, a parcel of meadow beside it, and all the wood and timber growing on the new road. He was to fence the highway at his own charge "for ever," and he was to hold the land without paying any rates "for ever."
His daughter Alice married Thomas Bancroft in 1647 and died in 1648. His daughter Sarah married Anthony Hubbard in 1648.
His wife Alice died at Dedham on 2 April 1648. On 14 April he made his will. It names "Michall Bacon my Eldest sonne," his sons Daniel and John, his daughter Sarah, and his son-in-law Thomas Bancroft. He died on 18 April, sixteen days after his wife. His inventory came to £54 15s 4d.
