Michael Bacon was born in England about 1608. In 1668 he told the Middlesex County court in a deposition that he was about sixty. He was the eldest son of Michael Bacon, who settled at Dedham, and his father's will of 1648 calls him "Michall Bacon my Eldest sonne." His son Michael and daughter Mary were baptized at Winston in Suffolk, the son in February 1639/40.

He came to New England in 1640. On 18 December that year his name was on the town orders for the proposed town of Woburn, and he was one of its original inhabitants. In 1644 he was chosen surveyor of highways. He served as a selectman from 1659 to 1665 and again in 1666, 1668 and 1670. Selectmen were the handful of men elected to run a New England town's business between town meetings.

In 1653 he and William Simms bought two hundred acres in the part of Cambridge that is now Bedford. The deed bounded it "by Capt. Cookes farme southeast and the Common Round elcewhere with all the meadow adjoyning to the great Swamp near the East corner of Concord boundes." Before 1675 he built a saw and grist mill on the Shawsheen River. In King Philip's War the mill was burned by Indians. A military guard was detailed for his protection, and the mill was rebuilt.

By 1675 he was living at Billerica. In August that year, as the town prepared its defense, he and his family were assigned to garrison house number 10, under the command of Timothy Brooks.

He married three times, and each wife was named Mary. The first, the mother of his children, died at Woburn on 26 August 1655. On 26 October 1655 he married Mary, widow of Thomas Richardson. She died on 19 May 1670. On 28 November 1670 he married Mary (Haines) Noyes, widow of Thomas Noyes of Sudbury.

His children were Michael, baptized at Winston in 1639/40; Mary, baptized there in 1640, who married Bartholomew Gale of Salem; Elizabeth, born at Woburn in 1642, who married Lieut. John Richardson; and Sarah, born in 1644, who married Caleb Simonds. His only son married his second wife's daughter Sarah. He died on 4 July 1688, about eighty years old.
