Michael Schrenk
Michael Schrenk was born on 12 November 1736 at Oberflacht, a small village in the Catholic parish of Seitingen, in the Tuttlingen country of Württemberg. His father was Lukas Schrenk, the village tailor. His mother was Maria Merz, who had been a widow when she married Lukas in August 1735. Michael was born fifteen months after that wedding.
He worked the land. The parish family register enters him as Bürger und Bauer zu Oberflacht. A Bürger was a full member of the village community, with a share in its rights. A Bauer was a farmer who worked land of his own. His household is entered at Oberflacht house number 44.
His mother died while he was a boy or a young man, some time between 1745 and 1759. In January 1759, when Michael was twenty-two, his father married again as a widower. The bride was Maria Anna Lehmann, the sacristan's daughter, who was fourteen months younger than Michael. She bore his half-brother Joseph in 1764, a half-sister Anna Maria, and a last half-sister, Maria Ursula, in 1780.
On 2 June 1761 he married Maria Anna Ilg, the daughter of Benedict Ilg, the Oberflacht miller. He was twenty-four and she was eighteen. Their family page lists ten children born over twenty-three years. Maria Anna came in October 1762 and Maria in October 1764. Johann Baptist, the first son, was born on 2 October 1766. Gertraud followed in 1768, Elisabeth in 1771, Lorenz in 1773 and Joseph in 1775. Katharina was born in 1778, Franziska in 1781, and a second Lorenz in March 1785.
Six of the ten are marked dead on the page, without dates: both of the first two girls, Gertraud, both boys called Lorenz, and Joseph. Four grew up and married. Elisabeth married out of the parish about 1806 and died in 1819. Franziska married in 1807 and lived until 1859. Katharina married in 1817 and died in 1851.
Johann Baptist married late, at thirty-five, in August 1802. His bride was Barbara Lehmann, a smith's daughter from Seitingen. Their household is entered at house number 44, the same number as Michael's. Four years later the son was dead, on 9 October 1806, and his wife died that December. They left a daughter, Maria Anna, born in January 1803. Michael was then sixty-nine and his wife sixty-four, and both were still living.
Michael died on 4 November 1810, eight days short of his seventy-fourth birthday. His stepmother died six days later, on 10 November. Maria Anna Ilg died on 19 November, fifteen days after him. They had been married for forty-nine years. In 1824 their granddaughter Maria Anna married Joseph Schrenk, the son of Michael's half-brother Joseph.
