Mighill Patten
Mighill Patten was born at Brookline, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, on 14 March 1795, the son of Nathaniel Patten and his wife Mehitabel. The family moved to the coast of Maine, which was then still part of Massachusetts.
He was a soldier in the War of 1812. He enlisted in the Army twice: on 8 May 1813, and again on 17 June 1814 at Penobscot, Hancock County, aged about 19. In September 1814 the British took Castine, the next town to Penobscot, and held it until the following spring. A pension application file exists for his service.
On 6 October 1821 he married Katharine Condon at Penobscot. Their son Mighill P. was born a year later, on 7 October 1822, and Samuel D. about 1826. A daughter, Mary J., married a Holt. Mighill stayed in Penobscot; he is in the censuses there in 1840, 1850 and 1870, the last time aged 75.
Catharine died on 9 December 1877. Mighill died at Penobscot on 26 February 1882, aged 87, and was buried beside her at Hillside Cemetery. His stone reads: "MIGHILL PATTEN / DIED / Feb. 26, 1882, / AE. 87 yrs. / he was a soldier in the war of 1812."
