Mighill P. Patten
Mighill P. Patten was born on 7 October 1822, a year after his parents, Mighill Patten and Catherine Condon, married at Penobscot, Maine. Penobscot is a farming and shipbuilding town on the east side of the Penobscot River's mouth. His father had been a soldier in the War of 1812.
By 1850 Mighill was living across the river's estuary at Bucksport, a river port and shipbuilding town. He married Julia A. Bowden. Their sons William P. and Calvin E. were born about 1854 and 1856, and the family was still at Bucksport in the 1870 census. Their daughter Lida Swazey was born at Bucksport about 1873, when Julia was in her mid forties. In 1880 the census found Mighill and Julia at Bucksport with Lida, 7, and a son, Samuel M.
Calvin died at Hong Kong, China, on 27 April 1898, aged about 42; his death was entered in the Maine records under his parents' names. William P. died at Bucksport on 9 February 1904. Lida had gone to Massachusetts, and on 20 January 1897 she married Edward James Long at Watertown, giving her parents' names to the clerk as Mighill and Julia Bowdin.
Julia died at Bucksport on 30 January 1909, aged 81. Mighill died there a year later, on 28 February 1910, aged 87 years, 4 months and 21 days. They share a tall stone at Hillside Cemetery, Bucksport, lettered PATTEN on the base. A veteran's flag holder stands beside it.
