Mildred Gertrude Price
Mildred Gertrude Price was born on 6 January 1913 in Florida. Her parents were George Benjamin Price, born at Barberville in Volusia County, and Alice May Minshew, born at nearby Pierson. She had two older brothers, Harry, born in 1910, and James, born in 1912.
In January 1920 the family was living at Bayard, in southern Duval County. Mildred was seven. A baby sister, Lila May, had been born two months before. Her father was foreman of the Pablo Cypress Company at Oak Landing, in St. Johns County. On 30 April 1920 he was shot and killed there, at 32.
Her mother took the girls back to Pierson. In the 1930 census Mildred, 17 and single, was living there with her widowed mother, Mrs. Alice May Price, and her sister Lila May, 10. Jake Raulerson had been born in the same town.
On 24 November 1934 Mildred Price, 21, married Jakie Raulerson Jr., 22, a trucker, at Fairfax, Virginia. The marriage register names her parents as George Price and Alice M. Minshew, and his as Jake Raulerson Sr. and Alice Clifton. The couple settled in Washington, D.C., where Jake drove a taxicab.
Their children were born in Washington. A son, Robert, was announced among the city's births in November 1938, a daughter, Sandra, in October 1940, and a daughter, Jacqueline Carole, born on 5 June 1942.
In February 1944 Jake went into the Army. On 30 January 1945 the Evening Star reported that he had been wounded in action in Italy on 11 October 1944. It gave Mildred's address as 3939 C Street S.E. and named the children, Robert, 6, Sandra, 4, and Jacqueline, 2. The paper added that she had "recently learned her husband had recovered from his wounds and had been assigned to light duty."
Jake and Mildred were divorced in Pinellas County, Florida, on 19 March 1947, and in 1950 the three children were living with him and his second wife in Sumter County, Florida.
Mildred later married Benjamin Love Storey, born in Maryland on 15 December 1915, a private first class in the Army in the Second World War. He died at Switzerland, in St. Johns County, Florida, on 8 December 1963. Mildred died at Switzerland on 9 January 1988, three days after her 75th birthday. She is buried in the Switzerland Community Cemetery under a bronze marker reading "Mildred G Storey, Loving Wife & Mother." Her mother and her brother Harry are buried in the same cemetery.
