Murray Ely Cohen
Murray Ely Cohen was born in Brooklyn on 22 March 1921, the son of Philip Cohen and Rose Cohen, and grew up with a sister, Florence, in Assembly District 16. The Slovik family lived in the same district, and the daughter of that house, Ruth, became his wife.
He served in the Coast Guard during the war. The honourable discharge is dated 26 October 1944, and he stood in front of Local Board 47 in Kings County to register for the draft the following day. The card describes a big man, six feet and two hundred pounds, brown eyes and brown hair, out of work that week, living at 7601 20th Avenue in Bensonhurst with a telephone at Beachview 6-6948. Question seven asks for the person who will always know your address, and he answered it with two names: Mr. Chas. Slovik, in brackets, and then his own father, Philip Cohen, at 1154 Pacific Street. Charles Slovik was Ruth's father.
By the census of 1 April 1950 he and Ruth were at Queens Village in Queens with a daughter, Linda, born in 1948. He gave his work as managing a retail store, and the household had still been in Kings a year before, so the move out of Brooklyn was recent. Later they went to Florida, as Ruth's mother and brother did.
He died at Clermont, inland from Orlando, on 7 August 2012, at ninety one. The notice ran in the Fort Lauderdale paper two days later, and the service was held on 12 August at Star of David Memorial Gardens in North Lauderdale, the cemetery where Ruth had been buried seven years before.
