Philip Cohen
Philip Cohen was born at 452 West 38th Street in Manhattan on 5 January 1899, the fourth living child of Joseph Cohen and Eva Selzer. The clerk entered him as Philip Cohn. His father was a garment worker off Hell's Kitchen, and there were four other children in the house: Lena and Jacob, both born in Poland, then Jennie and, two years after Philip, Isidore.
The family crossed the river to Williamsburg some time between 1910 and 1915, to 363 South 4th Street. He was sixteen when his sister Jennie married out of that house, and eighteen when his brother Jacob did.
In the last autumn of the war he was nineteen and at sea. His registration card of 12 September 1918 gives his trade as mariner and his employer as the United States Shipping Board, the wartime agency that built and crewed merchant ships, and puts his place of business at 172 Border Street in East Boston. He registered in Boston, not Brooklyn, and gave his father Joseph at the family address as the man who would know where to find him. He signed the card himself. It describes him as medium height and medium build, with brown eyes and black hair.
On 1 December 1919 he married Rose Glassberg, who lived at 287 South 4th Street, a few doors along the same street. Both gave their age as twenty one. When the census taker came a few weeks later Philip was still at his father's house, listed as a son, working as a plumber's helper in a ship yard. Their son Murray was born in March 1921 and a daughter, Florence, about 1924.
The household appears in the census of 1930 and again in 1940 at Assembly District 16, Brooklyn, in the same place both times. In October 1944 his son gave his address as 1154 Pacific Street, in Crown Heights. By the spring of 1950 he and Rose had left the city for Atlantic Beach, on the western end of the Long Beach barrier island in Nassau County. He died in Florida in April 1977, at seventy eight. His son and his daughter in law also died in Florida.
