Nancy Johnson
Nancy Johnson was a daughter of William Johnson of Rutherford County, Tennessee. His will, written on 19 January 1816, divides his goods among "John Johnson and Nancy Kuykendall, Edward Johnson and Mildred Miller and James Johnson and William Johnson & Polly Taylor." Her other brothers were Larkin and Mathew.
Her father died within weeks. That spring the heirs signed a bond to support his widow, Rebecca, for the rest of her life. Nancy's husband signed it as "Mathew Kuykendall, in rite of his wife, Nancy." "In right of his wife" was the legal form of the day: a married woman's share of an inheritance was held and signed for by her husband.
A DAR lineage form names her mother as Rebecca Larkin, the widow of 1816, and lists Nancy among Rebecca's children. No record states it. The same form, and a Johnson family history, give her father an English birth, which nothing supports. Her grandson Andrew Briggs Kuykendall also wrote that "her parents were from England."
Nancy married Matthew Kuykendall, by family tradition on 11 May 1780 in North Carolina. Family records give her birth as 10 July 1765 and her death as 4 September 1825 in Franklin County, Tennessee; one copy has 1 September. She was the mother of twelve children, among them the doctor John William Kuykendall and the Texas pioneers Abner and Absolem Kuykendall.
