Rebecca (Larkin) Johnson
Rebecca Johnson was the wife of William Johnson of Rutherford County, Tennessee. A DAR lineage form gives her maiden name as Larkin and her marriage as "prob. England 1765." A family group sheet of the 1970s doubts it: "I think someone guessed at Rebecca's surname." One of her husband's sons was named Larkin, which fits the name.
Her husband made his will on 19 January 1816 and died within weeks. He left her "all her household furniture and working tools, her choice of the horse beasts and her saddle and a good bridle, and two of the best cows & calves." He also left her "the negro woman Sara and the child Leah," who were enslaved. Everything was hers for life or until she married again. The will says she "makes choice to end her days with her son Larkin Johnson."
Between 28 February and 9 March 1816 her husband's children signed a bond to provide for her. The land was to be sold, and she was to take a child's share of it as her own. She signed it on 9 March with her mark. She could not write.
The DAR form lists Nancy Johnson, born 10 July 1765, among her children. No record states that Rebecca was Nancy's mother. If the form's 1765 marriage date is right, it falls very close to Nancy's birth. When Rebecca died is not recorded.
