Narcissis Elizabeth Bryant
Narcissis Elizabeth Bryant was born on 19 June 1836. In 1855, at eighteen, she married William R. P. Thurman of Henry County, Georgia. Four children came in five years: Sarah Elizabeth in February 1856, Mary Elizabeth Ann in April 1857, Charles in March 1859 and James William in March 1861.
William died in 1862, by a printed county compilation. She was twenty five. In 1866 she married John S. Hughes, who was born on 16 July 1846 and was ten years younger than she was. Their son Thomas Y. Hughes was born on 31 March 1867 and died on 8 January 1885, at seventeen.
John S. Hughes died on 27 June 1909. In February 1916 the Gordon column of the county paper reported that Mrs. John Hughs was spending a while with her son, C. R. Thurman. In March she was at her son J. W. Thurman's for his birthday. She died on 5 May 1916, aged seventy nine, and was buried beside her second husband at Old South Bend Cemetery in Fulton County.
Her maiden name is known from her son Charles. Georgia began recording the parents of the dead on death registrations in 1928, and Charles died in December of that first year. The clerk wrote his mother as Elizabeth Bryant. Her own stone calls her Narcissis E. Hughes.
