Charles R. Thurman
Charles Robert Thurman was born in March 1859 in Georgia, the son of William Thurman and Elizabeth Bryant, and settled in Henry County. His middle name is written out only on his death registration; the censuses give the initial. He married Sarah Margaret Stanley, born 13 May 1860, a daughter of Eli Stanley and Nancy McPeek.
The 1900 census has him in militia district 491 with his wife Sarah M. and four children: Victoria, Thomas H. C., Josiah N., and Sally I., who was then four years old. Ten years later the family is at Brushy Knob in the same county, the wife entered this time as Margaret, and the children as Victoria, Robbert, Job N. and Sallie J. His own death registration names his wife Margret, so she answered to both halves of her name.
The Josiah N. of 1900 and the Job N. of 1910 are almost certainly one boy, an enumerator's ear against a clerk's eye. Thomas H. C. of 1900 was living near Stockbridge in 1917 as H. C. Thurman, and that September he and his wife were visiting his parents. The Robbert of 1910 appears only in that census.
His land lay in the 12th land district of Henry County, beside ground held by his wife's brother, W. F. Stanley. A sale notice of November 1916 describes 31 acres bounded on the north by lands of C. R. Thurman, and on the east by lands of W. F. Stanley and C. R. Thurman.
He died on 7 December 1928 at Ellenwood, in Clayton County, about seven miles from Stockbridge, and is buried at Stockbridge in Henry County. Margaret died on 16 May 1931 and lies with him. His daughter Sallie married Grady Puckett of Conyers, and the two of them were buried in the same ground, Grady in 1958 and she in 1984, fifty six years after her father.
