Nehemiah Hayward
Nehemiah Hayward was baptised at Beverly on 10 July 1670, a son of Nathaniel Hayward and Elizabeth, and he was a cordwainer. He outlived two wives, moved twice, and died somewhere past eighty six.
He married Ruth Clarke at Marblehead on 12 January 1692/3. Two children of that marriage were baptised at Beverly, Abigail on 1 September 1695 and James on 10 July 1698. By 1711 he had moved to Salem and Ruth was dead, and on 6 September that year he married Bethiah Shaw of Beverly. Three more children were baptised at Beverly by her, Jabez in 1714, Eunice in 1717 and Andrew in 1719.
The Essex deeds have him in Salem through those years. In 1716 he sold his brother Samuel Hayward, leather dresser, a share of common land. In 1718 and again in 1720 and 1721 he was selling parcels in the township of Salem, one of sixteen acres formerly in the possession of William Dodge. Later he and that same brother, by then of Reading in Middlesex County, divided a quarter of a farm they held "in and by our s[ai]d Father[s] Last Will and Testament," their father Nathaniel being described as late of Salem, deceased. Nehemiah took the westerly side, forty one poles wide at both ends.
He followed his brother into Middlesex. On 10 December 1756 he made his will there, described as of the County of Middlesex, cordwainer, "being well in Body & of perfect mind." He signed it with a mark.
It is a small will and it names everybody. "Imprimis: I give to my Daughter Abigail Dodge Sixteen Shills lawful money besides what I gave her before." Then four shillings apiece to his grandson James Hayward and to Lydia, "besides what I gave to his father in Learning to be a Doctor." Then eight shillings each to a granddaughter Ruth Woodbury and a grandson Edward Halden. Then his gun to his son Josiah Maynard, which the son had borrowed of him and evidently not brought back. His January headed cane to his son Nehemiah. His iron kettle, the one he bought of Mr. Shillibe, to his son Jabez. His silver spoon to his daughter Eunice Mackentire. Four shillings each to his son Andrew and his daughter Rose Upton. To his daughter Elizabeth Hayward all the land he had in possession, except eight acres already given to his sons Josiah and Jabez, with the buildings and the personal estate. One cow between his wife's three daughters, Ruth Holt, Hannah Burnap and Tabitha Burnap. His third wife Ruth was to have the improvement of the estate with his daughter Elizabeth for life, and was executor with Deacon John Burnap.
Four of the children baptised at Beverly, Abigail, Jabez, Eunice and Andrew, are named in it, sixty years after the first of the baptisms.
