Niels Henrich Simonsen
Born at the end of 1812 at Risør on the Skagerrak coast and baptized in Risør church in January 1813, son of Jens Krast Simonsen and Petrea Halvordine Tønder, a Kragerø magistrate's daughter. On May 31, 1844 he married Fredrikke Charlotte Smith of the Linde farm in Idd parish, the border country outside Fredrikshald at the far end of the Oslofjord. By 1846 the couple had settled at Holmestrand on the fjord's west shore, where he worked as a Kontorist, an office clerk, and where the 1865 census finds the family in Langgaden: Fredrikke, twenty-year-old Dina, Fredrik, Valdemar, and a servant girl. When his daughter married a Tvedestrand merchant in 1868 the record wrote him plain Henrik Simonsen; her second son was christened Niels Henrik after him.
By 1885 he was no longer in trade. The census of that year calls him kjøbmand, nu contorist for byfogden, once a merchant and now clerk to the town magistrate, born at Østerrisøer. His wife died in July 1886. In 1891 he was a widower of seventy-eight and head of a full house in Langgaden. His son Jens Fredrik lived there with his wife and four children. So did his daughter Dina, her husband Jens Aslaksen and their two youngest boys, with a foster daughter named Eugenie Smith and a servant.
He died at Søndre Forstad 21 on 26 June 1896 of alderdomssvaghed, the weakness of old age, and was buried on 2 July. The burial register calls him a widower and a handelsborger, a licensed merchant of the town.
