Petrea Halvordine Simonsen

Petrea Halvordine Simonsen was born on 4 November 1846 at Holmestrand on the Oslofjord. Her father, Niels Henrich Simonsen, was an office clerk born in Risør, and her mother, Fredrikke Charlotte Smith, came from the Fredrikshald country. She was named for her father's mother, the Kragerø magistrate's daughter Petrea Halvordine Tønder. The 1865 census catches her at nineteen in her father's house in Langgaden, entered not as Petrea but as Dina, the name her family used. Her son's 1940 Social Security application remembers her the same way. Dina is the worn-down end of Halvordine.

She married the Tvedestrand merchant Jens Aslaksen in Holmestrand church on 4 November 1868, her twenty-second birthday, and went south to his town. Olaf was born there in 1869, Niels Henrik, named for her father, in 1870, and Valborg Eugenie in 1872. In 1870 they lived in her mother-in-law's house on the main street, and her brother Frederik, a young seaman, lived with them.

Later the family came north to her own country. Her son David was born at Botne, outside Holmestrand, on 17 May 1884, when she was thirty-seven, and Johannes followed in 1887. In 1885 she was staying in her father's house in Langgaden with the baby. In 1891 the whole family lived there with her widowed father and her brother Jens Fredrik's family. By 1900 she and Jens were at Aslaksborg, their own small house at Botne, and the census calls her a working man's wife.

In October 1905, at fifty-eight, she sailed with Jens for Ohio to join their sons. They lived at Cleveland until 1910 and then came home to Kristiania. She was a widow by 1920, living at Hjelms gate 2 B, supported by her family and taking two lodgers. Her son David lived at the same address in 1923, when she was seventy-seven. Her death has not been found.
