Ola Larsen was born in 1606 and held Håland in Erfjord, in the Ryfylke district of Rogaland, as odelsbonde. An odelsbonde owned his farm by odel, the old right by which family land passed down the line and kin could reclaim it if it was sold away. By Drange's account his father, Lars Olsen Håland, was back on the family farm by 1617 and died in 1625. His mother was Ingeborg, "gamle Ingeborg Håland", old Ingeborg of Håland, who came home from Kiladn in the late 1640s. Vikedals-ætter gives her as Ingeborg Jonsdatter Tøtland. His sister Lisbet married Henrik Sand.

In 1635 he married Marta Larsdatter, the widow of the lensmann Gudmund Toresen of Fosen in Avaldsnes. Drange calls Gudmund Toresen "lenets rikaste jordeigar", the richest landowner in the len. Marta brought three daughters, Siri, Kari and Marta, and a great deal of land. Land in western Norway was valued by the rent it paid, counted in butter, and a laup was the measure. By marrying her, Drange writes, Ola gained an estate of thirty laupar of butter, four times what his own parents had held. Marta and Ola came to Håland in 1635 and took the farm Vik as an outlying holding.

Drange counts them among the very richest farming people of the south-west, with an estate the size of a small parish. In court Ola was once described as "af Gud med god middel begavet", endowed by God with good means. Two of his deeds to land on Håland are known: half a laup of butter from his brother-in-law Henrik Sand and his sister Lisbet in 1640, and as much again from Lars Asgautsen Jørstad in 1658. In 1661 he also owned land at Sør-Eikje in Avaldsnes. About 1640 he had a storehouse on Håland decorated by a craftsman painter, and it still stands.

Their only son, Gudmund, was born about 1632 by Drange's reckoning. He married Brønla Åsmundsdatter, the only daughter of Åsmund Stokka, about 1651, and the young couple moved to Ile in Vikedal in the 1650s. Gudmund died in 1675, two years before his father.

After Marta, Ola married a daughter of Klaus Olsen Koch, a burgher of Stavanger. Ola died in 1677. That year his widow and his son's widow Brønla were sued together over the estate. In the settlement of 1677 and 1678 his grandson Ola Gudmundsen received most of Håland, and his widow went back to Stavanger.
