Gudmund Olsen was born at Håland in Erfjord, in the Ryfylke district of Rogaland, about 1632. He was the only son of Ola Larsen Håland and his wife Marta. Two printed works carry him. Ernst Berge Drange's farm history Erfjord: gardar og folk (2004) gives his birth as about 1632, and Vikedals-ætter (1979) gives 1633. Drange set the family out again in the yearbook Folk i Ryfylke in 2014.

His mother was the widow of the lensmann Gudmund Toresen of Fosen in Avaldsnes, whom Drange calls "lenets rikaste jordeigar", the richest landowner in the len. She brought three daughters from that marriage, Siri, Kari and Marta. Drange writes that Marta and Ola "var òg blant dei aller rikaste bondefolka på Sørvestlandet", were among the very richest farming people of the south-west. Their estate, he adds, was as large as a small parish. Gudmund was the one son of that house.

About 1651 he married Brønla Åsmundsdatter, also written Brynhild, the only daughter of Åsmund Johannesen Stokka. Vikedals-ætter calls her "Ryfylkes rikeste gifte på sin tid", the richest match in Ryfylke in her day. The same book says the two were second cousins. Drange gives her birth as about 1623 and notes that she was somewhat older than her husband.

The couple left Håland in the 1650s for Ile in Vikedal, and Ile became the family seat. Drange is plain about it: the children grew up at Ile, "altså ikkje på slektsgarden Håland", not on the family farm at Håland. There were ten of them, and by his account all ten grew up and made marriages of standing. Brønla and Gudmund gathered a great deal of land. Drange writes that they "rangerte høgt mellom Vest-Noregs største jorddrottar", ranked high among the largest landowners of western Norway. In 1670 Gudmund owned the whole of the farm Gjerde in Tysvær.

He was lensmann in Vats from 1665 to 1671. A lensmann was the Crown's officer in a rural district, who collected taxes and kept order under the fogd. Two of his sons held the same office after him, Osmund in Vats and Lars in Vikedal.

He died in 1675, by the Erfjord book; one passage in Vikedals-ætter gives 1677. Either way he died before his father. In 1677 his widow and his father's widow were sued together over the Håland estate. In the settlement after both father and grandfather, in 1677 and 1678, his eldest son Ola received most of Håland.
