Ole Olsen Lofthus
Gaardmand of Lofthus in Aal parish, high in Hallingdal, born about 1802. He is named in the parish book on 4 April 1847 when his son Syvert was baptised, with his wife Kristi Syversdatter, the clerk writing the farm Lofthum.
On 24 April 1858 he took out a passport for America at the Hallingdal bailiff's office, and the clerk who issued it entered the whole household: Ole Olsen Lofthuus, gaardmand, 56; Kirsti Syversdatter, hustru, 55; and five children, Ragnild 22, Kristi 18, Ole 14, Syver 11 and Lars 8. The fee was 64 skilling and the destination is given in one word, Amerika. The Syver of eleven is the boy baptised at Lofthum in 1847, and in Minnesota he became Sever Olson Lofthus of Montevideo.
The same clerk wrote a description of him, because passports of the period described the bearer: sixty-seven and a half tommer tall, well built, blue eyed, and light brown of hair going a little grey. He was fifty-six. That entry is the only physical description of anyone this far back on this side of the family. His own birth, death, parents and marriage are all still unread, and nothing has been found of him after he left Norway.
