Sever Olson Lofthus
Born 14 March 1847 and baptised on 4 April at Aal in Hallingdal, in the upper Hallingdal valley of Buskerud, the son of Ole Olsen and Kristi Syversdatter. The parish clerk entered the child as Syvert and the family's residence as Lofthum, which is the Lofthus farm; in America the given name became Sever, the patronymic Olson, and the farm name turned into the surname the whole family has carried since.
He crossed as a child. On 24 April 1858 his father took out a passport at the Hallingdal bailiff's office for the whole household, and Syver, aged eleven, is fourth on it, behind Ragnild, Kristi and Ole and ahead of Lars. In the Norwegian settlement country of western Minnesota he married Anna Einersen, a Sogn woman from Leikanger, in 1873. They raised ten children between 1874 and 1898, among them Louis Emil, born in 1888. He died at Montevideo in Chippewa County on 26 October 1930, aged eighty-three, and lies in Sunset Memorial Cemetery there, in Block 115, Lot 4. Anna was buried in the same plot fifteen years later.
