Oma Fields
Oma Fields was born in Arkansas in 1892. On 23 January 1909, aged sixteen by the license, she married William Richard Teague. Both of them lived at Mountainburg in Crawford County, and W. R. Peters, a justice of the peace, performed the ceremony.
In May 1910 she was 18 and keeping house in Mountain Township of Crawford County, where Will was farming fruit. She had borne one child, Minnie Lee, who was five months old. Four dwellings earlier on the same census page lived Bettie Fields, a widow of 44 born in Missouri, with her sons Bailey and James, who was 9. Bettie had borne five children and all five were living. A cemetery memorial for Oma gives her parents as James Edward Fields and Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Williams, and a brother James E. Fields born in 1900, so the widow down the road was probably her mother. The census itself does not say whose daughter Oma was.
By 1930 Oma was living at Watchorn in Oklahoma, the oil-field village where her daughter Minnie lived. On 20 December 1930 she went with Minnie to Perry, the Noble County seat, and stood witness when Minnie married Frank Sappington. The clerk wrote her down as Oma Teague of Watchorn.
Will left her in 1931. In January 1933 the school census at Red Rock, in Noble County, listed Oma Teague as the parent of a boy born on 19 December 1919, which fits her son Dearl. On 11 April 1935, still living in Noble County, she swore to a petition for divorce in the district court there, case No. 5008. It said that during 1931 Will had wholly abandoned her, without fault on her part, and had refused to support her ever since. Will signed a written waiver of summons and offered no evidence. On 27 May 1935 Oma came to court in person with her attorney, H. A. Johnson. The court found her petition true and granted her an absolute divorce on the ground of abandonment. It ordered Will to pay her fifteen dollars as permanent alimony within thirty days and restored her maiden name, Oma Fields. Under the law of the time the decree did not take effect until six months had passed.
A cemetery memorial for her names three more children with Will: Hazel, born in 1917, Dearl in 1919 and Billie Lee in 1924. The same memorial records a second marriage, to Andy Lee Webster, in 1940. She died in 1966 and is buried at Highland Cemetery in Pawnee as Oma Webster. Her flat granite marker shares a base with the marker of her son Billie Lee Teague, who died in 1963. Minnie lies in the same cemetery.
