Orta Sharp
Orta Sharp was born in Erie County, Ohio, on 7 October 1886, the son of Dee Sharp and Helena Bechtel. His draft cards give his birthplace as Vickery, a village just over the line in Sandusky County. In 1900 he was thirteen and living with his parents and his brother Herbert and sister Alta at Berlin Heights, east of Sandusky.
On 26 June 1909 he crossed into Canada and married Hattie Ruggles at Windsor, Ontario, across the river from Detroit. He gave his age as twenty three. The register names her parents as James Ruggles and Caroline Holley. By the census of 1910 the couple were back in Sandusky, living in Ward 4 in the house of his father Dee, with his mother Helena and his little sister Alta.
Their children included Orta Edward, born 30 November 1911, Florence, born 16 June 1915, and probably Mildred, about 1922. He registered for the draft of 1917 to 1918 and again in 1942, at Sandusky.
In April 1950 Orta was sixty three and living in Sandusky with his daughter Florence, her husband Willard Heiberger and their children. He died at Toledo on 23 July 1967, aged eighty.
