Patrick Joseph Farley was born on 1 May 1882 in Troy, Rensselaer County, New York. His memorial names his parents as Nicholas J. Farley (1851-1916) and Bridget Smith Farley (1846-1916). His siblings were Christopher Francis Farley, Nicholas A. Farley and Jane Gertrude Farley Gusty.

He married Lillian Adella Conklin on 21 April 1914. They had five children: Jane Elizabeth Farley (1915), Lillian Rose Farley Surles (1916), Mary Cecelia Farley Murphy (1918), Christine Patricia Farley Glowth (1921) and Nicholas W. Farley (1925). Lillian died in April 1933, leaving him with five children, the youngest about seven.

Patrick worked at Kings Park State Hospital, a large state psychiatric hospital on Long Island. His memorial says he graduated from its nursing program in 1917 and worked there as a registered nurse. It also describes him as a devout Roman Catholic.

On 17 September 1947 he married Katherine Elizabeth Weston Coullahan, who died in 1954. Patrick died in Kings Park on 16 March 1967, aged 84. He is buried in Saint Patrick's Cemetery, Smithtown.
