Peter Dunbar
Peter Dunbar was born at Hingham, Massachusetts, on 6 September 1668. He was a son of Robert Dunbar, "a Scotchman", and his wife Rose.
On 25 March 1691 he married Sarah Thaxter, a daughter of Samuel Thaxter and Abigail Church. She had been born at Hingham on 16 November 1668. Their first child, Abigail, was born at Hingham on 4 December 1691. The next, Sarah, was born at Weymouth on 26 June 1693. Then came James on 15 November 1694, Leah on 30 May 1697, who died in 1699, Elisha on 21 October 1699, Peter on 16 November 1701 and Samuel on 11 May 1704.
In 1699 he was one of the selectmen of Hingham. Selectmen were the small board a New England town chose each year to run its business between town meetings. His name is not on the Hingham tax lists after 1707.
Mitchell's history of Bridgewater picks him up at Bridgewater. He "came from Hingham a. 1706 and settled in B.; his wife, Sarah; had Josiah 1706, John 1709, David 1711; bought a place of Jacob Leonard 1706." Mitchell was unsure about Abigail, who married Joshua Fobes in 1711: "she might have been sister to Peter, and not his D." Lincoln's list of the Hingham births answers the doubt. Abigail was Peter's eldest child, and a sister of the younger Peter.
His son Samuel went to Harvard, graduating in 1723, and became the minister at Stoughton. In 1748 he preached the election sermon of the Artillery Company. He died in 1783.
