Peter S. Hulvey
Peter S. Hulvey was born on 15 August 1839 at Fulks Run, in the Brocks Gap hills of Rockingham County in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. His parents were John Hulvey and Margaret Ritchie. In the census of 1850 he was twelve and living on his father's farm in Rockingham County with his parents and eight brothers and sisters. His mother died in 1857, when he was seventeen, and his father married again, to Melvina Custer, a widow.
When the Civil War began, a Peter Hulva enlisted in the Seventh Virginia Cavalry, the regiment raised in the Shenandoah Valley by Turner Ashby, who led Stonewall Jackson's cavalry in the Valley campaign of 1862. His service record opens in 1861. No other Peter of that name is known in the county, and he was very probably this Peter.
On 25 August 1864, in Rockingham County, Peter married Sarah Hottinger, eighteen, from Shenandoah County, the daughter of Jacob and Nelly Hottinger. The county clerk entered Peter as twenty-four, born in Rockingham, the son of John and Margaret Hulvey. The family remembers the date as 15 August. It was the last full year of the Civil War, and within weeks Union cavalry were burning barns and mills across the county.
Peter and Sarah settled near Fort Seybert in Pendleton County, across Shenandoah Mountain in what had just become West Virginia. Their children were William D. in 1867, George F. in 1869, Margaret Ann in 1872, Lewis Howard about 1873 and Albert Pete in 1875.
Peter's father died without a will in December 1872. Peter died about 1875, when Lewis was two or three and Albert was a baby, so his share of his father's seventy-one acres in Rockingham County probably passed to his children. That land stayed with his stepmother until a suit among the heirs, begun in 1891, ended in the Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia in 1895 with an order to divide it.
In 1880 Sarah was raising the children on her own in Pendleton County. Peter is buried in the old Bethel cemetery at Fort Seybert, now the Fairview Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Nearly sixty years later his son Lewis, applying for Social Security in Oklahoma, named him as his father.
