Lewis Howard Hulvey
Lewis Howard Hulvey was born on 20 September 1873 at Fort Seybert, in Pendleton County, West Virginia, by his own account to the Social Security office. His family gives 20 September 1872. He named his parents as Peter Hulvey and Sarah F. Hottinger. His father died about 1875, and in 1880 Lewis was growing up in his mother's household in Pendleton County with his brothers Daniel, George and Albert and his sister Margaret.
As a young man he went west to the Choctaw Nation of Indian Territory, where the coal mines around McAlester drew workers from all over the South and the Appalachians. On 21 February 1898 he married Elizabeth Riller Jones, the sixteen-year-old daughter of an Alabama coal miner.
In June 1900 Lewis and Elizabeth were living in Township 5 North, Range 15 East of the Choctaw Nation with their son Charley, aged one. The census taker gave Lewis's birthplace as Alabama and his age as 36, though both his parents were entered as born in Virginia.
Their daughter Sarah Ethel was born in 1902 and Grace Florence on 6 April 1904 at Gowen, a coal town in what became Latimer County. Two later sons, Stanley Franklin (1922) and Raymon H. (1923), are also given as theirs. A daughter, Margaret Letta, died in West Virginia.
In 1930 Lewis and Elizabeth were at Dow, in Pittsburg County, with Stanley. In 1940 they were at Harmon, and in April 1950 Lewis, about 76, was at Bokoshe in Le Flore County. He outlived his daughter Grace, who died at McCurtain in 1948, and his wife Elizabeth, who died in 1955. Lewis Howard Hulvey died on 2 September 1957 at Shady Point, Le Flore County, aged 83. He is buried in Shady Point Cemetery.
