Phebe W. Wadsworth
Phebe W. Wadsworth was born in 1822, a daughter of Jesse Wadsworth and Abigail B. Loker of Moose Hill in Fayette, one of a family of nine children of whom four died young. Her granddaughter remembered the Wadsworths as "an illustrious family": the squire with his tall beaver hat showing "his gentlemanly bulls and ladylike cows" at the Maine State Fair at Wayne, and the brick house of twenty-eight rooms, bricks made and timber cut on the farm, that took sixteen men eight years to build.
In 1847 she married Columbus Cooper Warren, a sea captain of her own age. Their daughter Mary Abby was born in 1848 and died in 1857, and the captain died in 1859. Phebe came home to the Wadsworth place. The Rev. Roger Ela, a widowed circuit rider eighteen years older than she, preached at the Moose Hill church, and they married. He built a house for her on Moose Hill, and their daughter Elizabeth was born there in September 1863. He died in 1869.
She was a small woman. "Both of her husbands could stretch their arms out straight and she could walk under them without bowing. She married two big men." She wove great webs of cloth and sat at her spinning wheel all day, and she taught her granddaughter that if she asked Jesus for anything that was right, he would give it. She died in 1891 and is buried at Moose Hill under a flat marble stone: "PHEBE W. WARREN, WIFE OF REV. ROGER ELA, 1822-1891".
