Elizabeth Ela
Elizabeth Ela was born on 11 September 1863 at Fayette, in the house on Moose Hill that her father, the Rev. Roger Ela, had built with timbers he dragged out of the woods on his back. He was a circuit-riding preacher of fifty-eight; her mother Phebe Wadsworth, forty-one, had buried a sea-captain husband and a small daughter before she married him. Elizabeth was the only child of that second marriage, with three grown half-siblings on her father's side. Her father died in March 1869, stricken while preaching, when she was five.
She was better schooled than the farmer she married. On 1 May 1885, at Fayette, she married Walter Waters Plant, twenty, and they farmed on Moose Hill. Their first child, Nettie Estelle, was born on 23 March 1886, and there were three more. Both parents, Nettie said, "were very much interested in schooling"; a visitor who found the two-year-old Nettie reading told her, "I tell you, Lizzy, that girl is going to be a teacher."
She died on 7 November 1943 at Livermore Falls, aged eighty. Her funeral was held on the Wednesday at two o'clock from the L. P. Brown funeral home, the Rev. F. S. Kinley of the First Baptist Church officiating, and she was buried at Moose Hill Cemetery. The bearers were her grandsons and sons-in-law: Horace Davenport, Private Almon Mitchell, Charles Losey and Raymond Royal. Two of her Mitchell grandchildren came in uniform, Private Margaret Mitchell from Alabama and Private Almon Mitchell from Tennessee; her daughter Nettie and granddaughter Phoebe came from Fayette, and R. E. Plant and his wife from Hingham, Massachusetts.
