Family accounts say he enlisted in Company G of the 36th Alabama Infantry on 1 February 1863, a farmer of thirty five born in Monroe County, and that the company's muster rolls list the battles of Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, Crow's Valley and Rocky Face.
In June 1880 Philip Owens, 51, was farming at Old Texas, Beat No. 11, Monroe County, with his wife Mary A., 49, and his sons Asbery, 19, Wherry, 12, and Philip, 9, all working on the farm.
