Phoebe Constance Mitchell
Phoebe Constance Mitchell was born on 3 June 1925 at Fayette, the last of the ten children of James Marion Mitchell, a paper-mill grinder man, and Nettie Estelle Plant, a schoolteacher turned farm wife and newspaper reporter. Seven of the ten lived to grow up: Marion, Lucie, Roger, Charles, Margaret, Almon and Phoebe. Her father died in March 1936, when she was ten, and her mother raised the younger ones on the farm on Fayette Ridge Road, taking in other people's children besides.
In April 1930 the census found her at four in her father's house at Fayette with her mother and six brothers and sisters, Margaret, Marion, Lucie, Roger, Charles and Almon. In April 1940, at fourteen, she was in the same house at North Fayette with her widowed mother, head of the household, and her brothers Almon and Charles. She went to the Fayette schools and graduated from Livermore Falls High School in 1943. In November of that year she was "Phoebe Mitchell of Fayette" among the mourners at her grandmother Elizabeth Plant's funeral at Livermore Falls, beside her mother and her sister Margaret, a private in the Army at Alabama.
Her son Carrol James was born on 3 March 1945 at Brockton, Massachusetts. On 23 March 1946, at Fayette, she married his father, Percy E. Walton of Wilton, a man of forty-four who was also her first cousin, the son of her father's sister Susan. On 27 April 1950 she and Percy were at Wilton, Franklin County; the boy, five, was at her mother's house on Fayette Ridge Road when the Fayette enumerator came two weeks later. In 1961 they lived at West Farmington. Percy died at Fayette in November 1965.
She was a homemaker and worked at the Farmington Shoe Company until she retired in 1987. She belonged to the Moose Hill Baptist Church and the Chesterville Baptist Church and was a longtime member of the Grange, as her mother had been. She lived for many years at Chesterville.
She died on Thursday 18 September 2008 at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, after a short illness, aged eighty-three. Her funeral was held on Tuesday 23 September at the Moose Hill Baptist Church in Livermore Falls, and she was buried in Moose Hill Cemetery among four generations of her family. Her flat granite stone reads "Daughter of James and Nettie Mitchell", with a line from Isaiah across the top. She was survived by her son Kyle Walton and his wife Cathy of Industry, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
