Carrol James Walton
Carrol James Walton was born on 3 March 1945 at Brockton, Massachusetts, the shoe city south of Boston, the son of Percy Edmond Walton and Phoebe Constance Mitchell. His parents were both from the Fayette and Livermore Falls country of western Maine, and they married there a year after he was born, on 23 March 1946 at Fayette. Percy was forty-four and Phoebe twenty. They were first cousins: Percy's mother and Phoebe's father were sister and brother.
On 12 May 1950 the census taker found him, aged five, in his grandmother Nettie Mitchell's house, the fifth house on Fayette Ridge Road in Fayette. The sheet lists Nettie E. Mitchell, 64, widowed, keeping house; her son Charles R. Mitchell, 31, a farm helper working forty hours a week; "Walton, Carol J., grandson, 5"; and three lodgers, Ralph T. Hiltz, a widowed wood cutter of 49, Herbert W. Torsey, 76, and Ann Meserve, 82, born in French Canada. His parents were at Wilton, Franklin County, where the census had found them two weeks earlier, on 27 April, without him. By 1961 they were at West Farmington.
His grandmother was the reporter for the Livermore Falls Advertiser and the Grange librarian, and the farm was the one she had kept since 1909. She was still writing her columns at eighty-nine, and a film crew came to the house to put her on camera for a national television advertisement.
He drove a truck for most of his working life, "a long time trucker of the road", and retired in November 2003 because of illness. He married three times in the Maine records. On 15 May 1981, as Carrol J. Walton of Livermore Falls, he married Janice L. Mitchell of Livermore Falls. On 31 December 1985, as Kyle J. Walton of Chesterville, he married Jean E. Smith of Chesterville. On 26 May 1990, as Kyle James Walton of Chesterville, he married Blanche Catherine Seals of Industry, the Cathy of his last twenty-eight years. His son Sheldon was born at Lewiston in 1969, before any of those marriages; the record of that first marriage, and the name of Sheldon's mother, has not been found.
He was Carrol in the 1950 census and in his 1981 marriage record, and his son knew him by that name. By 1985 the records call him Kyle, and Kyle James Walton is the name on his obituary and his memorial. His mother's obituary in 2008 calls him Kyle Walton of Industry.
He died at home in Industry on 6 April 2018, aged seventy-three. His obituary says he loved bowling and helping new people learn how to bowl, enjoyed gardening in the summer, playing cribbage, and fishing with his son, and was active in his church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was survived by his wife B. Cathy Walton, his son Sheldon J. Walton of Auburn, and two granddaughters. A daughter, Sheila, and a stepson, Randy, had died before him. A graveside service was to be held later, under the care of Adams-McFarlane Funeral and Cremation Services of Farmington; where he is buried is not recorded.
