Phoebe Davenport
Phoebe Davenport was born in North Carolina about 1809. She married Isaac Loman, also a North Carolinian, and they lived in Madison County, Kentucky, where their eldest son James was born in 1831 and Elias in April 1834. They had seven children. Isaac died about 1842, when James was eleven.
She married again, to Leonard F. Coffman, a Kentuckian born about 1807. Their daughter Emily was born about 1844, so the marriage probably falls between 1842 and 1844. In 1850 the Coffman household in Hopkins County, Kentucky, held four of her Loman children, and the enumerator wrote her down as Ann. Their son Leonard Franklin Coffman Jr. was born in Kentucky on 20 May 1849.
By 1860 the family had moved to Jefferson County, Illinois, where her Loman sons were settling. The census that year wrote her as Phereby, fifty-one, born in North Carolina. Leonard was fifty-three, with four hundred dollars of property entered against his name. In the house were Zilpha A. Thompson, twenty-two, her married Loman daughter; Joseph R. Loman, nineteen; Emily F. Coffman, sixteen; Leonard F. Coffman, eleven; Isaac Loman, twenty-four; and Elizabeth, nineteen, born in Illinois. Her eldest son James lived next door. In his house was Raynor M. Loman, sixty, born in North Carolina, a man of her first husband's generation. Elias was farming the township to the north.
Her name comes down in several forms. Phereby is the 1860 census. Ann is the 1850 one. Pheobe Ann Davenport Loman is her son Leonard's memorial, which names her as his mother. Phoebe is the county history of 1883. Her granddaughter Phereba Loman, five years old in 1860, carried the rarest of them.
When and where she died is not known, and neither are her parents.
