Walter Elias Loman was born on 15 April 1834 in Kentucky and was in Jefferson County, Illinois by the census of 1860. No 1850 household is known for him under any spelling of the name, so he arrives in the record as an adult and stays there. The printed life of James Loman, very probably his elder brother, puts the family in MADISON COUNTY, KENTUCKY, when James was born in 1831, and by 1850 the Lomans were in HOPKINS COUNTY, in the western coalfield above the Tennessee line.

He served the Union as a private in Company B of the 31st Illinois Infantry. That regiment was raised by John A. Logan, mustered into federal service at Cairo on 18 September 1861, and drawn almost entirely out of the bottom counties of the state, from Williamson, Perry, Franklin, Jackson, Johnson, Saline and Union. It had a hard war. At Fort Donelson on 15 February 1862 it executed a change of front to the rear, in the middle of a fight, over broken ground and through tangled brush, and lost two hundred and sixty men killed and wounded in the afternoon. It came out of that day with a nickname it kept for the rest of the war, the Dirty-first. Belmont, Donelson, Vicksburg, Kennesaw Mountain, Atlanta, the March to the Sea and the Carolinas followed: fourteen battles and twenty-five skirmishes in all.

He drew a pension from 8 September 1879. The 1880 census finds him at McClellan Township with his wife Sarah and nine children, among them the three-year-old John Washington. He died on 5 January 1893 and is buried on the McClellan ground.

Two Loman households sit in Hopkins County in 1850 and both of them are in Jefferson County, Illinois ten years later, which is where Elias is. The first is James Loman, born in Kentucky in 1831, and his wife Sarah J., born 1829, boarding with a Lurania Warson and a family of McLeans. The second is a set of four Loman children, Isaac H., Zelpha A., William H. H. and Joseph R. W., born between 1835 and 1842, living in the blended household of Leonard F. Coffman and a wife named Ann. A man born in Kentucky in 1834 fits in the middle of that run exactly.
