Pierre George Christilles
Pierre George Christilles was born at Lampertsloch, a village of northern Alsace in the Bas-Rhin, in 1805, by his gravestone. He married Marie Salome Forst of Kutzenhausen, the next village, about 1828. Their children were born at Lampertsloch: Catherine about 1829, Barbe in August 1833, Georges, François Joseph, Michel, and Salome in the spring of 1844.
In December 1844 the whole family went down the Rhine to Antwerp with the ninth shipload of colonists Henri Castro sent to Texas. The American ship Probus, Captain De Vries, left Antwerp on 6 December and Flushing on the 8th, bound for New Orleans. The list numbers the families. No. 12 is Joseph Christilis, 75, a farmer. No. 13 is Pierre, 40, farmer, Salomé his wife, 42, and their children Joseph, Georges, Michel, Catherine, 16, Barbe, 11, and Salomé, nine months. They reached New Orleans on 27 January 1845 and went on to Castroville.
In 1850 Pierre was farming at Castroville. On 15 July 1852 he took title to his colonist's land, 640 acres in sections 31 and 275, on Castro colony certificate 42. His daughters married in the church at Castroville: Catherine to Francis Eduard Braden in 1851 and Barbe to Blaise Meyer in 1852.
Pierre died on 5 October 1856, at about fifty-one, and was buried in the St. Louis Catholic Cemetery at Castroville. His widow lived thirty-six years more. A modern ledger now lies before her old stone, naming both of them and their villages: "Mary Salome Christilles, Kurtzenhausen Alsace, 1802 to 1892. Pierre George, Lambertslock Alsace, 1805 to 1856."
