Pieter Tiemeijer

Pieter Tiemeijer was born on 23 September 1824 at Hoogezand, the long canal village at the head of the Groningen peat colonies. His father, Johann Fridrich Tiemeijer, was a labourer of thirty-five, a former sailor whose own parents bore German names; his mother, Freerkje Harms Dijk, was thirty-three. He grew up a farm hand.

On 5 June 1847 at Sappemeer, aged twenty-two and a boerenknecht, he married Marijke Wijgertjes, twenty-four, a day-labourer's daughter of Sappemeer. A son Jan of that marriage died at Sappemeer on 11 September 1849, and Marijke herself died not long after. On 20 May 1854, a widower of twenty-nine working as a dagloner, a day labourer, he married again at Sappemeer: Marijke Kasemier, also twenty-nine, a dienstmeid, a servant girl, born at Nieuwe Compagnie in Hoogezand, the daughter of a farmer.

By 1861 Pieter had left the land for the water and was a praamschipper, skipper of one of the flat-bottomed praams that carried peat down the colony canals. He and Marijke had children at Sappemeer in 1855, 1861 and 1864 and at Wildervank in 1868; the son born 23 August 1861 was named Jan after the boy lost in 1849. Daughters married at Veendam in 1877, 1889 and 1891 and at Zuidhorn in 1882. The family settled at Oosterdiep on the Veendam canal.

In 1901 their son Jan took his family to America. Marijke died at Oosterdiep on 9 August that year, aged seventy-six, and Pieter followed her on 7 December 1901, aged seventy-seven, his death registered at Veendam with his parents' names.
