Rachel Virginia Mullins
Rachel Virginia Mullins was born on 2 October 1899 in Dickenson County, Virginia, by her stone, a daughter of John Preston Mullins and Sarah Elizabeth Sanders. The census of June 1900 found her as Rachel, born October 1898, in their house in Willis district with Tivis, Sorapsa, Triphane, Hannah and Hampton. She was a Mullins by birth who married a Mullins. On 25 October 1916 at Skeetrock, aged seventeen, she married Lonnie Mullins, nineteen, the son of John and May Mullins of Clintwood. They had a daughter, Reeble Irene, and a son, Hassel, born in December 1919, and they followed the work to the coal camps at Jenkins, Kentucky.
She died at Jenkins in the last week of June 1936, aged 36, after an operation for appendicitis in a Jenkins hospital. The Dickenson Forum reported that she died on the Saturday night, that she was "a daughter of the Rev. John Mullins of Skeetrock section", and that she left her husband and four small children. Her funeral was held in the Flemingtown church, conducted by Reverends Remines, Vanover and Dingus. The Bristol Herald Courier of 2 July 1936 reported the death and said her body was taken to Flemingtown, at Clintwood, for burial, and that she left her husband and the children "Mrs. R. Boggs, Hassel, Inetta, and Carrol Chanette". Her stone at Flemingtown, which carries her photograph in an oval, reads June 23, 1935, a year and five days earlier than the Kentucky death certificate and the newspaper; the certificate and the paper agree with each other and are the better evidence. Lonnie died two years later and Hassel seven, and all three lie together at Flemingtown.
