Sarah Elizabeth Sanders was born on 18 February 1861 in Pike County, Kentucky, and went by Elizabeth. She married John Preston Mullins of Wise County, Virginia, and lived out her life across the state line in what became Dickenson County.

In 1900 she was Sarah E. Mullens of Willis district, with six children at home: Tivis, Sorapsa A., Triphane, Hannah J., Hampton and the baby, Rachel. Her children's death certificates name her as Elizabeth Sanders. When Rachel married Lonnie Mullins at Skeetrock in October 1916, the clerk entered her as Elizabeth Mullins.

She died at Skeetrock on 20 December 1923, aged 62, and was buried in the family graveyard now called the John P. Mullins Cemetery. Her stone reads "Elisabeth Mullins, born Feb. 18, 1861, died Dec. 20, 1923." John was laid beside her ten years later. A photograph kept by the family shows her seated in a dark buttoned dress with a light kerchief at the neck, her hair parted in the middle and drawn back, wearing spectacles.
