Ralph Farnum
Ralph Farnum was a barber. On 13 July 1635 he was among the passengers entered at London to sail for New England in the James, John May master. Every one of them had brought a certificate from their minister of their conformity to the Church of England and that they were "no Subsedy Men", meaning none was assessed for the parliamentary tax.
The clerk wrote the family as "Barber Ralph Farman 32, Alice Farman 28, Mary Farman 7, Tho: Farman 4, Ralph Farman 2." So Ralph was born about 1603 and his wife Alice about 1607.
The family went to Andover. Savage's Genealogical Dictionary makes Ralph the father of Mary, who married Daniel Poor in 1650, and of Sarah, who married George Abbot on 26 April 1658. He also makes Thomas Farnum of Andover, who died on 11 January 1686 aged about fifty three, a son "brot. with him in ch.hood by their f." The ship's list fits each of these. Its Mary of seven would have been twenty two at her marriage, its Thomas of four matches Thomas's age at death, and its Ralph of two is the Ralph of Andover who married in 1658.
Daniel Poor's will of 1689 calls John Farnum his brother-in-law, which ties Mary to the same family from her husband's side. Ralph's own death is not recorded.
