Reba D. Carter
Reba D. Carter was born on 30 July 1875 in Clarence Township, Calhoun County, Michigan, the daughter of Hosea B. G. Carter, an Ohio-born farmer, and Narsena J. Starks, who had been born in the township herself. She lived her whole life there. In the census of 1900 she was 25 and still at home with her parents, her brothers Bert and Adrian and her sister Rhea. Her grandmother Phebe Starks, 78, lived with them too.
She married Charles J. Davenport in 1900. Their first four children died young, between 1901 and 1905, and were buried in Clarence Center Cemetery. On her thirty-first birthday, 30 July 1906, her daughter Minnie was born and lived. Benjamin, Cleave and Eunice followed. Charles died in 1954.
Reba D. Davenport died on the afternoon of Monday 28 March 1960 at her home on Route 2, Springport, aged 84. The Battle Creek Enquirer ran her obituary the next day: "She was born in Clarence Township, where she lived her entire life. She was married to Charles Davenport in 1900. He died in 1954. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Minnie Kellogg of Route 2, Albion, and Mrs. Eunice Harris of Route 2, Eaton Rapids; two sons, Cleave at home and Ben of Rives Junction; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and a brother, Adrian Carter of Remus."
