Rev. Jeremiah Peck
Jeremiah Peck was born in or near London about 1623, the only child of William Peck and his wife Elizabeth when they emigrated. He came with his parents to Boston in 1637 and on to New Haven in 1638. He had a good education, partly before he left England. Cotton Mather said he was bred at Harvard College, but his name is not in its list of graduates.
On 12 November 1656 he married Johanna Kitchell, daughter of Robert Kitchell of Guilford. He was preaching or teaching school at Guilford then. In 1660 he was called to take charge of the Collegiate School at New Haven, a colony school set up by the General Court in 1659 to teach Latin, Greek and Hebrew and fit young men for college. It closed for lack of money in the summer of 1661. It was later revived and became the Hopkins Grammar School.
In the autumn of 1661 he went to Saybrook as minister. Like many in the New Haven Colony he opposed the Half-Way Covenant of 1662 and the union of New Haven with Connecticut under the charter of 1662. When the union came in 1665 he left. He went first to Guilford and then, in 1666, became one of the first settlers of Newark, New Jersey. He preached at Elizabethtown and became its first minister about 1670. Woodbridge, New Jersey, called him in 1670 and 1675, and Greenwich called him more than once. In the autumn of 1678 he accepted Greenwich and became its first settled minister.
His ministry there was quiet until 1688, when he refused to baptize the children of parents who were not full church members, as the Half-Way Covenant allowed. That probably led to his resignation in 1689. He began preaching at Waterbury, accepted the town's unanimous call, moved there early in 1690, and became the first settled minister of its church in 1691, at nearly seventy. He served until his death at Waterbury on 7 June 1699. Johanna survived him and died there in 1711.
