Rev. Roger Ela
Roger Ela was born on 20 December 1804, probably in New Hampshire. When he was seven his parents moved to New Sharon, Maine, and the boy drove the cattle the whole way while his mother rode with the baby in her arms and his father drove the ox cart with their goods. He became a Baptist minister and a circuit rider, carrying his Bible in his saddle bags to preach at five churches a week, for which he was paid seventy-five cents.
He married Emily M. Carlton, born 1806, and had children by her: Levi Carleton (1834), Gustavus W. (1840) and Frances (1841), and perhaps others, for his granddaughter said he had nine. Emily died in 1859. Phebe Wadsworth of Moose Hill, a widow who had lost a sea-captain husband and a small daughter, heard him preach at the Moose Hill church; they married, and he dragged the timbers out of the woods on his back and built a house there. Their daughter Elizabeth was born in September 1863, when he was fifty-eight.
He began having what the family called bad spells. While preaching a sermon he was stricken and died a few hours after, on 25 March 1869, aged sixty-five years and four months; it was found to be cancer. He is buried at Moose Hill Cemetery, Livermore Falls. His granddaughter Nettie Mitchell said of him: "His sermons came straight from the Bible. He believed literally everything that was in the Bible and he preached to people to live by its tenets."
