Rhoda Hammons St. Denis
Rhoda Belle Hammons was born on 26 March 1938 at Hillsboro in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, the youngest of the twelve children of Henry Silas Hammons, called Sy, and Sarah Ann Lewis. Her father gave his address as Hillsboro when he registered for the draft in 1942, and the family moved between Pocahontas and Nicholas Counties through her childhood. In April 1940 she was two years old, listed as Roddie, in a household with her brothers and sisters Syntha, Eva, Bertie, Clifford, Alfred, George and Lucy.
Her mother died on 30 July 1948, when Rhoda was ten, and was buried in Richwood Cemetery in Nicholas County. The older children were already leaving for Ohio: her sisters Eva and Bertie both settled in Stark County, and her brother Clifford stayed at Richwood.
Rhoda married Charles A. St. Denis, a Quebec-born veteran of the Second World War fourteen years her senior. Their daughter Mildred Lee was born at Ashtabula, Ohio, on 28 January 1958, when Rhoda was nineteen. The family went to California, where Catherine was born at Downey in 1965 and Rhoda, called Robbie, at Los Angeles in 1966, and came back to Rome in Ashtabula County, Ohio. There were four daughters in all: Sheila, Mildred, Catherine and Robbie.
Rhoda Belle St. Denis died on 5 May 1982 at Ashtabula, aged 44. She was cremated and her ashes were buried on private ground at Rome. A small flat stone there reads "RHODA B. ST-DENIS, MAR 26 1938, MAY 5 1982". Her husband outlived her by five years and lies in a national cemetery in Texas.
