Sarah Ann Lewis was born on 1 March 1900 in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, the first child of Henry B. Lewis and Susie Mullins. Her parents married in Greenbrier County on 25 April 1901, when she was a year old. Nine brothers and sisters followed her over the next twenty-eight years: Dessie Belle in 1903, Lee Opal in 1907, Roscoe in 1910, Kennie Herbert at Trout in 1913, Mae Fannie at Falling Spring in 1915, James in 1918, Burlin Joe in 1923, Edna Ann in 1924 and Robert on Tea Creek in Pocahontas County in 1928. By the time the last was born Sarah had been married nine years and had children of her own.

She married Silas Hammons, called Sy, on 9 December 1919, at her father's house. She was 18 and he was 20, so the day before, both fathers had gone with them to the county clerk to give their consent. G. W. Boothe, the minister who had married her own parents, performed the ceremony. Silas was the son of Richard Scott Hammons and Martha Jane Stanley. They had twelve children. In 1930 the family was at Edray in Pocahontas County, where her parents also lived, with Lucy, Alfred, Eva and Syntha in the house. An infant daughter had died at the McClung Hospital at Richwood in December 1925. Clifford was born at Stomping Creek in 1930, Bertie in 1936 and Rhoda Belle at Hillsboro in 1938. In 1940 eight children were at home.

By 1948 the family was living at La Frank in Nicholas County. Sarah died of cancer at the McClung Hospital in Richwood at six in the morning on 30 July 1948, aged 48 years, 3 months and 29 days. Her husband, Henry Hammonds of La Frank, gave the details for her certificate. He named her father as Henry Lewis and wrote that he did not know her mother's maiden name or where either parent was born. She was buried on 1 August 1948. She was buried in Richwood Cemetery, where her mother would join her in 1963 and where her grandparents William and Sarah Jane Mullens already lay. Her youngest, Rhoda, was ten years old.
