Rhoda Smiley
Rhoda Smiley was born on 7 June 1791 in Pennsylvania. The date is the one written in her husband's family Bible.
She married Frederick Harbaugh in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, on 3 October 1815. He farmed in Dover Township and was later a justice of the peace there. Their first son was born on 28 July 1816 and was given her maiden name, Smiley, as his first name. It was a common way of keeping a mother's family in the next generation. She had ten children in eighteen years: Smiley, Sarah, John, Josiah Foster, Jemima, Mary Jane, Anne Eliza, Elizabeth, Isaac and Frederick.
Smileys were in Tuscarawas County as well. A John Smiley, born in 1787, died at Mount Eaton in March 1839 and lies in a Smiley family burying ground near Sugarcreek. The grave memorials put up for that family give Rhoda as his sister, and as a daughter of Robert Thomas Smiley and Rhoda Boyd, whose daughter Agnes married Moses Fream in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Rhoda would then carry her own mother's given name. No record of her own time has yet been found that names her parents.
She outlived her husband by nine months and died on 13 April 1866, aged seventy four. She is buried beside him in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Tuscarawas County.
