Smiley Harbaugh
Smiley Harbaugh was born in Ohio on 28 July 1816, the eldest of the ten children of Frederick Harbaugh and Rhoda Smiley. The date is the one his father wrote in the family Bible. His parents had married ten months before in Tuscarawas County, and they gave him his mother's maiden name for a first name.
He grew up in Dover Township, where his father farmed and from 1832 was a justice of the peace. He married Mary Patterson in Warwick Township, Tuscarawas County, on 14 March 1839, and was counted at Dover in that county the following year. Through the late 1840s the county court has him being sued by J. S. Deardorff and Brother, merchants of Dover.
By 1850 he had moved to Coshocton, the next county over, where the census found him at thirty three, a tinner, with Mary, three children and two young Pattersons in the house. Within two years the household was gone. His daughter Janietta died on 17 March 1851, aged five, and a son, Denis, on 9 July 1851. Both lie in Oak Ridge Cemetery at Coshocton under stones reading "Son of S. & M. Harbaugh" and "Daughter of S. & M. Harbaugh." Mary was dead by March 1852. Lucian, his eldest, was sent away; a family history of 1947 says he was raised from the age of ten by a John Dayton.
Smiley married Margarett F. Willett at Coshocton on 21 March 1852, and they had Hiram W. in 1852 and Homer in 1854. By 1860 he owned a hardware store. A Margaret signs a Coshocton deed beside him that year. He married Rachel Stockman there on 2 February 1864.
He died in 1870. Jacob Weiser was bonded as administrator, the appraisers valued the estate at $6,230, and Rachel, his widow, bought the real estate back out of it. He is buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Coshocton, near the two children of 1851.
