Richard Burton Golden, called Dick, was born on 26 May 1853 in South Carolina, one of at least eleven children of Nathaniel Greene Golden and Arzela. Both of his parents were South Carolinians and so were all four of his grandparents.
The family moved twice before he was grown. Pickens County, South Carolina through the 1850s. The copper mining town of Ducktown in Polk County, Tennessee by 1860, where he is the child the census calls Dick. The ninth district of McMinn County outside Athens by 1870, where he is fifteen and his father is entered as a doctor. Then over the mountains into north Georgia.
He married Mary Ann Fain in 1875, when both were twenty two, and they farmed in the Boardtown district of Gilmer County. The 1880 census has him at twenty seven, a farmer, with three small daughters. By 1900 there are eight children in the house and the census records the marriage as twenty five years old.
He named his children after his own brothers and sisters. His were Eliza, Mary, Elizabeth, Joseph, Martha and Green. His are Liza, Martha, Joseph and Green. Four of nine, and the same habit runs through this family in both directions.
He registered to vote in Gilmer County in 1898 and died on 22 January 1910, aged fifty six. He is buried in Golden Cemetery in Fannin County, the burying ground that carries the family surname, where his son Joseph was brought sixty three years later.
