Richard Hassand of Thorganby
Richard Hassand of Thorganby in Lincolnshire, born somewhere about 1500 to 1510 and dead by the spring of 1544. His own words survive because he made a will.
He dictated it on 17 February 1543/4, describing himself as Rycharde hassand of Thorganbye husbandman. The preamble is entirely of its moment: he bequeathed his soul to almyghtie god or lady saynt Marie & to all ye saynts in heven and his body to the churchyard of Thorganby, which is Catholic language written in the last years it could safely be written in an English will. He left sixpence to the high altar for tithes forgotten, sixpence to the mending of one glass window in the church, and fourpence to Our Lady's works in Lincoln.
Then the family, one object at a time. A two year old ewe, a counter and a hutch to his daughter Elizabeth; a gold ring to his daughter Margaret; a silver ring and a sword to his son William; a filly, a blue coat, a doublet, a pair of hose and a shirt to his son John. His wife Agnes and his son William were to have the farm for the remaining years of his indenture, and the two of them were made executors, to dispose of the residue for the health of his soul as they thought best. No probate is recorded on it.
